Summary: Ist ein Frieden zwischen den Religionen möglich? Bietet die Geschichte keine Beispiele für einen solchen? War der Zeitabschnitt des „Al Andalus“ denn nicht durch eine harmonische Koexistenz von Juden, Muslimen und Christen geprägt? Indem er die goldene Legende der einen und den Manichäismus der anderen ablehnt, zeigt Georges Bensoussan, dass die arabische Welt für Minderheiten, und zwar insbesondere für die jüdischen, eine Stätte des Schutzes, aber auch der Unterwerfung war. Gestützt auf Recherchen in militärischen, diplomatischen und Verwaltungsarchiven, rekonstruiert Bensoussan diese Beziehungen. Über die Geschichte der Emanzipation und der Unterdrückung hinaus geht es ihm darum, wie sich das Verhältnis der muslimischen Welt zur abendländischen Moderne von den mittelalterlichen Wurzeln bis zur Dekolonisation langfristig entwickelt.
