Zusammenfassung: | A question that is becoming increasingly interesting is what Yugoslav socialism was, and what succeeded it. Any political “archaeology” of the regime in question assumes, directly or indirectly, a level of judgment, as to which there can be no question in any circumstances. This paper uses a certain “textual analysis” prompted by the structural analysis adumbrated by Hannah Arendt in her classic work on totalitarianism. In so doing, it places the point of judgment as far back as possible, under the auspices of the previous regime, so as to achieve a certain deconstructivist effect, particularly in the political domain as we are now experiencing it. Yugoslav communism has no chapter of its own in books on totalitarianism; rather, it is relegated to footnotes. Even in Lefort’s interpretation, where it might figure in the main text, one finds that it is passed over in silence, a suggestive fact in itself. And yet, Lefort encourages us primarily to see Titoism in the former regime – that is, a regime of imaginary embodiment. Perhaps the long-lasting and all-encompassing exchange of gifts – during his rule, Tito constantly received gifts from every cell of the social body – is the principal axis of the regime (the symbolic exchanges of Titoism). In the trajectories of gifts that are given, but seldom returned, one may see, by referring to Freud and Mauss, merely the fabric of fraternal coexistence. Ethnonationalism – the popularity of which confirms why Tito was unable to bestow on his people his greatest gift of all – has no desire whatsoever to renounce that heritage. |
