Zusammenfassung: |
The etymology of NHG schummeln 'to deal deceitfully (for one's own gain)' has not as yet been satisfactorily given. A connection with Yidd. Schmul 'Samuel' is as improbable as a derivation from thieves' cant schund 'mud, excrements' : the latter has produced beschunderlen, not however beschummeln. The verb schummeln 'to deal commercially' has been derived from a noun Schummler 'a trader from Schum i. e. the Jewish word for the three cities Speyer, Worms, Mainz'. The modern meaning 'to deal deceitfully' has received its derogatory sense observed in the various meanings the word has in Southern German dialects. The above is supported by a parallel case : the family name of the owners of a large commercial undertaking in Augsburg, Fugger, appears in the verb fuggern. As schummeln, fuggern today means 'to make business transactions' as well as 'to deal deceitfully'.
|
