Zusammenfassung: | <p>The traditional emendations of Nuit(h)ones, a Germanic tribal name mentioned by Tacitus, as a mis-written form of *Niutones „fishermen“, *Huitones „the white ones“, or *Nurthones „people of Nerthus“ have to be abandoned. The comparison with other mis-written forms in Tacitus’ Germania clearly supports the assumption of a metathesis of the t and i, the correct emendation thus being *Nutiones belonging to the Germanic n-stem *nut-jan- „one who is taking, making use of“.</p> |
