Zusammenfassung: | <p>Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) has remained the most popular hymn writer in the German-speaking countries, despite the linguistic, social and mentality changes that have occurred over the centuries. Only after the Second World War, official hymn-books covering the whole respective countries were issued, and these, dating from 1941-1998, are examined with regard to the cuts and changes made by the editors in Gerhardt's hymns. They reveal a tendency to play down the role of hell and the devil and an angry or vengeful God, but also to avoid language and images that are considered too intimate, too drastic or too undignified. While the German editors have more respect for the poet's texts, the Swiss editors may have a more realistic concept of what is understandable and acceptable to their congregation.</p> |
