Summary:The article revises the wide-spread assumption of the illegibility of the mechanical writing in Kafka’s <Emphasis Type="Italic">In der Strafkolonie</Emphasis>, including its putative poetic implications. Breaking with this tradition, the paper outlines the momentum of tension between ethics and epistemology governing the entire novel. This tension finds itself compressed into the process of writing torture that in the end is to be annihilated through the machine’s implosion and the officer’s death. Lifting this tension, however, causes the novel’s own determinant paradoxical poetics to reach a crucial point of standstill, which is why Kafka himself has made so many efforts to devise an alternative ending to his novel.
