In order to interpret the contrast of the images of magnetic domain walls on X-rav topographs obtained by Lang's method, one calculates the deformation of the lattice for an indefinite 90° Bloch wall parallel to (110). This leads to the conclusion that the deformation within the wall has a negligible influence on the propagation of X-rays, and to a study, in terms of the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction, of the transition of wave-fields from one domain to another, i. e. from one part of a perfect crystal to another one, the orientation of which is slightly different. In the symmetrical transmission setting, the boundary conditions at the domain wall correspond to the Bragg case. One shows that either total reflection or partial reflection and refraction with enhanced or reduced absorption can occur. The main features of the wall images which these phenomena may be expected to produce on topographs are qualitatively determined and compared to the experimental results. |
