The substratum of Brittanny is not limited to the peninsula. It extends as far as the sunken block of the Channel to the North and as far as the under-sea continental slope to the South and West. Two East-West faults divide Brittanny into three zones. To the North, the Channel area includes both low plateaus of crystalline rocks and a continental shelf made of mezozoic and cenozoic sedimentary rocks. The central area which extends from the sea of Iroise to Anjou consists mainly of schists and sandstone. To the South, « Arvor » (granit, gneiss and micaschist) together with a vast mezozoic and cenozoic sedimentary continental shelf forms the Bay of Biscaye Area. |
